Ludia gave me data about tournament medals for more than 1000 battles before and after the rule change (reward based on current medals vs high score). Winning the minimum (20) or losing the maximum (40) went from 0.89% to 32.5%. Winning 20-25 OR losing 35-40 went from 7.33% to 49.11%.
I finally got escalated to a supervisor after months of ridiculous non-answers from a support agent. They gave me a summary but slightly massaged the data, counting from when I sent the first support ticket regarding tournament medals rather than when the tournament rules changed. So I dumped the raw data into Minitab (they literally pasted the data for 1000+ battles in the support chat) and recalculated.

Their conclusion (and then closed the ticket) was that there had been no change in how the medals are calculated (the original support agent claimed for weeks that the team is "investigating the issue"), and that the abrupt rise in min/max medals is due to the fact that more people are battling because of the championships. Therefore, there is no problem.
