I created a highly advanced converter to bring osu! maps into the VR rhythm shooter Audica
Audica is a VR rhythm shooter developed by Harmonix, the developers behind Guitar Hero 1/2 and the Rock Band franchise. The game is exceptionally fun and modlessly supports custom songs on both PC and Quest, but due to the smaller size of its community, only a limited selection of custom songs exists. In cooperation with fellow Audica modder October, I have spent over a month developing a converter to automatically turn osu! levels into highly playable Audica levels.
Here is an example of the result, a 100% raw, unedited, converted level: https://youtu.be/VQHix2SwjBE
While Audica features gameplay that is similar to osu! in nature, there are several fundamental differences that makes the game play very differently, and makes turning osu! maps into playable Audica maps far from a trivial task. The by far greatest and most important challenge being hand assignment. Each target in Audica is required to be shot with either left or right hand, indicated by the targets color. What makes for the most comfortable hand assignment of targets depend on a variety of factors relating to timing and position of the target in relation to surrounding targets, and the hand assignments of surrounding targets. Inspired by the osu! difficulty calculator, I designed a hand assignment algorithm that models a wide range of different types of strains, combined with a forward search-and-simulation strategy to find hand assignments that minimizes strain through the level. A more detailed writeup on the hand assignment algorithm can be found found here
In addition to hand assignments, a lot of other systems are in place to make osu! levels convert to playable and enjoyable Audica levels. Adaptive scaling keeps targets within comfortable range of the VR headsets more limited FOV, while still allowing the level to utilize Audicas larger playspace. Chain conversion makes streams playable with VR controller triggers, stack distribution makes stacks readable, and melee conversion utilizes the melee mechanic of Audica and the physicality of the VR space.
The converter is also already seeing some media attention: https://vrscout.com/news/rhythm-game-osu-vr-converter-audica/ https://www.androidcentral.com/add-over-one-million-songs-audica-brilliant-osu-converter
