So I posted some of this off-handedly in comment on a post about Valdor earlier but after thinking about it some more... there's actually one too many parallels here to be an accident on GW's part, so I can't help but feel that they're building to something.
In short, my theory is this:
Russ will return as an Odin-like figure (as opposed to the Thor-like character he was at the time of the Heresy)
He'll come back from the warp with one-eye missing, having sacrificed it for knowledge (echoing Magnus's deal with Tzeentch), wielding the Odinspear (Gungnir, the Dionysian Spear), with two Ravens at his side (Corax and Janus) being accompanied by a Baldr-like figure, (Valdor, who wields the twin of Russ' spear, the Apollonian Spear)
Jaghatai Khan has been chilling with Cegorach in the Black Library. He will return as a Hanuman-like figure (White Monkey, the Monkey King and Supreme Destroyer of Evil)
I'm going to try to elaborate on how I think
this could happen, but keep in mind these are all speculation to connect the dots that I can see. Russ' Quest for the Tree of Life
The ties between the Wolfies and Norse Mythology is nothing new obviously, but as we see in his recent story arcs, particularly in Wolfsbane
-- Russ is turning from a brash and reckless Thor-like Character (his sword was named Mjalnar ffs) into a more reserved, contemplative Odin-like figure and wielding a Golden spear literally named Gungnir, being Odin's Spear.
We also know from the Space Wolves Omnibus
that he is off in the Warp, searching for the Tree of Life (Yggdrasil).
Now, in the mythology Odin, also known as the Hanged God, hung himself until dead on Yggdrasil in exchange for forbidden knowledge.
If GW is going to borrow from the myth, we could well see Russ undergoing a similar feat with the Tree of Life... but why? what knowledge is he after? well to restore the Emperor of course.
Given how intertwined his wyrd is with Magnus, I'm imagining a scenario wherein he makes a deal with Tzeentch in exchange for the knowledge to save the Emperor, echoing Magnus' deal for the knowledge to save his sons. Like Magnus, he will lose an eye in the process (Odin only has one eye).
Odin's Ravens: Huginn and Muninn (does their symbol look like anything to you?)
Besides being the God of War and Death, Odin also bears the title of the Raven God. In the myth, he has two Ravens. Huginn and Muninn. They act as spies/scouts and confidantes to Odin. They tell him of his enemies' movements and guide him spiritually. Raven is also associated with Tzeentch, and as I linked above... their symbol looks a hell of a lot like the Imperial Aquilla.
If GW is turning Russ into an Odin-like figure (which I definitely think they are), they will need to give him two two Ravens to go alongside Odin's two wolves Freki and Greki (which he already has).
So, who could these Ravens be? 1. Corax
Given the spy/scout function that Huginn and Muninn served to Odin. One figure that fits the description of a Raven spy/scout to a T is Corax. Corax, as we know from the short-story Shadows of the Past
is also in the Warp, by himself. Knowing this I could well see a "The Wolf and the Raven" type bundle from GW to release them at the same time.
I also remember reading (but I can't for the life of me remember where) that in one of the Horus Heresy Novels, Russ had stated that he has quite a bit of affinity with Corax and loved sparring with him.
We also know that Corax was the one who rescued Russ from Yarant after his botched execution of Horus during the events described in Slaves to Darkness
, so these two definitely have a history already. 2. Janus
The other function of Odin's Ravens is that of a spiritual confidante/guide. Who do we know that has an association with Ravens that could also meet this function?
One figure comes to mind... Janus
Janus was formerly known as Revuel Arvida. As detailed in the short-story Allegiance
and the Novel Scars,
Arvida was a former Corvidae and his personal sigil was the Raven. During the story, Yesugei Targutai gifted him a new armor-pauldron to replace his broken one, the new pauldron had his Raven sigil lovingly carved in by Yesugei. During this scene, Arvida contemplated the Raven image and noted that he has a destiny with this symbol.
As we know, later on Arvida absorbed Magnus' Nobility shard and assumed the identity of Janus. First Grand Master of the Grey Knights. Nobody knows what ultimately happened to Janus but given how powerful and pure he is supposed to be, I doubt we have seen the last of him... especially since that he's part-Primarch at this point (Magnus' Nobility Shard was said to be by far the most powerful-single shard of his.)
Janus serving as Russ' second Raven could also serve another purpose, and that is: to save Russ before he could seal the deal with Tzeentch.
Janus would be well aware of Tzeentch trickery (given prior experience) and I can see a scenario where the Magnus-part of him still hasn't forgiven himself for his big fuck-up. In seeking redemption, I see him seeking to meet up with Russ with the aim of reconciling so they can work together to find a way to restore the Emperor.
In this narrative, he will intervene before Russ can seal the deal with Tzeentch. Russ still loses an eye, but he does not lose his soul.
Being a Grey Knight he will obviously also be able to advise and consult Russ spiritually and assist him with Daemon-slaying.
Russ and Valdor, Thor and Baldr, Dionysus and Apollo.
We know from the short-story Two Metaphysical Blades, that the Emperor personally crafted two spears. The Apollonian and the Dionysian. He said the wielder of these two spears will be opposites, but compliment each other.
The Apollonian, named after the God of the Sun, Apollo was gifted to Constantin Valdor, Firstborn of the Ten Thousand. This spear grants its wielder the truth, knowledge and history of anyone it wounds.
The Dionysian, named after the God of Wine and Partying, was gifted to Leman Russ. This spear grants anyone it wounds with their own history and truth.
In the same short story. We see Russ and Valdor handling the outcome of the Heresy in very different manners. Where Valdor was calm and collected and still believes this is part of the Emperor's plans, Russ raves and rages, drowns himself in sorrow and alcohol on Fenris.
Then, partway through the story, as they were both minding their own business on Terra and Fenris, both Russ and Valdor sees a vision.
Unfortunately the short story doesn't describe what they saw, but it's very likely that they saw the same thing and almost immediately after seeing this vision, both departed from their planets in different manners.
Russ announced his departure, giving his famous "Wolftime" speech and partying hard before leaving.
Valdor left without telling a living soul. His last words, 'Only in death...' were whispered towards the Sacrophagus of the Emperor before he departed, never to be seen again.
Baldr the Bright, Brother to Thor, Son to Odin
Given this short story, it's basically all but explicit that Valdor left alongside Russ in their search of a way to restore the Emperor... but how does this tie in to Russ being Odin? who is a figure in Norse mythology that Valdor could represent?
Baldr. Baldr the Bright, Baldr the Brave, God of Light/Sun, brother to Thor, son to Odin.
Other than the similarities of their names (Valdor, Baldr), Baldr is also the God of Sun/Light. He is described as golden and shining... Much like Valdor's armour.
Being the God of the Light/Sun also fits because Valdor wields the Apollonian, a spear named after another God of the Sun, Apollo.
If Valdor is indeed supposed to be Baldr, then unfortunately for you Valdor fans out there -- if GW follows the myth, he will die.
Baldr's death triggers Ragnarok/The End Times/The Wolftime/Rhana Dhandra. I don't know how he'll die in 40k exactly, but in the mythology, he dies through the trickery of Loki. Here the role of Loki could be played by either Tzeentch (which would tie it back to Russ' deal) or Cegorach, which could tie in to the Eldar Rhana Dhandra.
Bonus Spin-Off Theory: The Khagan, Cegorach and the Rhana Dhandra
Speaking of Cegorach and Loki... in Harlequin's 8th it's revealed that the Rhana Dhandra's ending was altered by Cegorach. The story now has a twist ending wherein Slaanesh will be tricked into sacrificing itself to save the Eldar instead of destroying them.
Ever since, the Harlequins have all working behind the scenes to rig the scene to bring this ending to fruition.
This I think goes some way to explaining why Sylandri Veilwalker has been popping up here and there in stories to do with various loyalist Primarchs, apparently seeming to be working towards bringing them back into the scene. Off the top of my head she's been responsible for:
- Resurrecting Guilliman and helping to trap Magnus in the Webway (Rise of the Primarch);
- Getting Fabius to raise and subsequently betray a perfect clone of Fulgrim, handing him to Trazyn (Clonelord);
- Screwed up Ka'Bandha's plan to corrupt the entire Blood Chapters, (which leads to some Sanguinius related developments) (Devastation of Baal).
- If my theory about Cegorach playing the part of Loki, then she may play some part is Russ' Return
Cegorach participating in current events also feeds into my theory about the Khan. See:
Magnus mentioned that Khan was supposed to end up on Chemos and Fulgrim on Chogoris but for the intervention of a third party (i.e. Neither the Emperor, nor the Chaos Gods). My bet is that this was Cegorach.
The Khan went into the Webway (Cegorach's domain) never to be seen again. Fulgrim is Slaanesh' Champion, but my bet is that he wasn't its first choice, I'm betting the Khan its first choice and Cegorach, being Cegorach and hating Slaanesh, intervened and made the Khan his Champion instead
Khan (and the white scars) are known for their speed and famed for their motto of "Laugh while you're killing!".
Guess who else is super fast and known to laugh while they're killing? Harlequins! Know who Cegorach the patron of? that's right! My headcanon is that the Khan has been hanging with Cegorach in the Black Library, receiving Harlequin training which will boost his already prodigious swordsmanship and speed to truly ludicrous levels.
Cegorach' ultimate plan is to take out Slaanesh, having the Khan take out Slaanesh's chosen is no brainer really. On top of all this, the Fulgrim v Khan duel has been hyped up since that one scene during the Triumph on Ullanor.
When he returns, I'm seeing the Khan returning as a Hanuman-like Figure. For those unfamiliar, Hanuman is better known as the Mokey King. Part-flamboyant prankster, part-scholar and all warrior. His other titles include: The White Monkey
and Supreme Destroyer of Evil.
Hanuman is also a key figure in the Epic Ramayana, which the Eldar's Rhana Dhandra is clearly based on.
Alright, so there you have it folks. Let me know what you think!
EDIT: Bunch of grammar and spelling changes... I wrote this pretty late last night. Also... thanks for the feedback and Gold fellas! much appreciated :)
Below is the great secret.
Of how those from Heaven came to Earth.
Because I believe they`re Saints amongst us.
People that have the potential to change the world.
However this is the forbidden fruit.
If you haven`t gained a mastery over your sub consciousness it will supersede you.
Because our sexual desire fuels the inner fire.
That primordial spiritual energy that drives us to reproduce.
Once harnessed is the key to your spiritual evolution. Love...
However every time our fire is extinguished it drains us of our vitality.
What they don't tell you, is that this energy is almost limitless...
You may harness it at will and if you don't give into the temptation.
The energy slowly moves its way through the spine and into the crown.
Producing spontaneous Kundalini
The effects are numerous:
- Bliss, feelings of infinite love and universal connectivity, transcendent awareness, seeing truth (third eye opening), euphoria
- Awakened sense of smell, hearing, taste
- No longer controlled by desire/cravings
- Sound heard in the pineal gland (pleasurable/enjoyable)
- Change in the thyroid, sudden ability to sing in perfect pitch, change in voice
- Change in the sex organs
- Change in breathing
- Energy rushes or feelings of electricity circulating the body. This tingly feeling, at first, might be mistaken for a "shiver."
- Involuntary jerks, tremors, shaking, itching, tingling, and crawling sensations, especially in the arms and legs
- Intense heat (sweating) or cold, especially as energy is experienced passing through the chakras
- Spontaneous pranayama, asanas, mudras and bandhas)
- Visions or sounds at times associated with a particular chakra
- Diminished or control over sexual desire
- Emotional upheavals or surfacing of unwanted and repressed feelings or thoughts with certain repressed emotions becoming dominant in the conscious mind for short or long periods of time.
- Headache, migraine, or pressure inside the skull. Relief of this pressure during an awakening may be felt as a "popping," depending on the person and their body at the time the awakening begins to occur.
- Pains in different areas of the body, especially back and neck
- Sensitivity to light, sound, and touch
- Trance-like and altered states of consciousness
- Disrupted sleep pattern (periods of insomnia or oversleeping)
- Vegetarianism or veganism
- Change in body odor (sweetness/natural/healthy)
Which varies depending upon one`s ability to control the flow.
Patterns will begin to emerge...
However its only our imagination.
A knowing without experience.
Is the difference between our creative spark and fantasies.
Of lives long ago...
Thus if one wishes to become a Ascended Master all one must do is learn how to Ankh
Allowing us to sustain the state indefinitely.
It is this knowledge that Prometheus taught the Annunaki
The Sacred Fire in which he stole from the Gods.
The ability to consciously move our Sacral energy into the Crown.
In which for a brief instances you merge with your higher consciousness.
However we must remember the story of Icarus.
Because I can teach you to fly but if you get to close, you will lose your wings and drown.
Thus the safest method is to practice with a partner. As it's love that tethers your consciousness when it reaches that transcendental state. Through Tantric Sex
In order to consume the forbidden fruit all one needs to do is strengthen the necessary muscle
to hold it in and if the Heart is open it will induce a amplified Kundalini Awakening.
For once someone masters this technique, they may harness vast amounts of energy at will.
However In order to sustain the fire, requires religious discipline or else it will consume you.
For when we do it naturally we only receive a tiny portion of this energy. This alone drives many into an endless cycle of lust.
And it's this understanding that became the forbidden knowledge maintained throughout all the ancient mysteries and the corruption that preceded it.
As it was only Reserved for the select few, once they have completed years of training.
For Monks naturally ankh through meditation by remaining celibate.
A Satanist harvests vasts amounts of this energy. In order to amplify it's release.
And in Christianity...
They maintain the original divine spark...
In which two souls mate they ascend.
Thus is the prophecy of their resurrection
Because I believe they`re Saints amongst us.
People that have the potential to change the world.
For I`m only a messenger.
This is a Revelation
But if your doing it anyways...
“Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the Tree of Life
and eat, and live forever” - Genesis 3:22
