Help with Cradlepoint for Remote Teams - WiFi as Wan Not Working Consistently - Not Sure if Better Solution Available
I handle IT for a very small company. It's not my primary role, but we don't have anyone else that can do it. We have 2 groups that work almost exclusively in the field. Our primary needs are reliable internet access and wireless printing capabilities. To accomplish this, we use Cradlepoint IBR600LPE routers. We first check to see if there are ethernet jacks in the room that we're working in. If so, these work about 80% of the time. In about 20% of the cases, we are unable to connect (maybe MAC address filtering?). From there, we attempt to use the WiFi as WAN feature. This has been a major disappointment, as I find that it almost never works (maybe a 20% chance that it will connect). As a last resort, we use cellular 4G. It works well enough, but we end up using a ton of data. We'd ideally like to keep it for backup if the client's network goes down.
We never have issues connecting to the client's WiFi from our laptops. I have been contemplating using some type of virtual router software on an unused laptop (I've seen Connectify, but I'm sure there are others). I would connect to the client's WiFi using this laptop, then share the WiFi to the laptop's ethernet port. From there, I could connect an ethernet cable from the laptop to the Cradlepoint. This seems overly complicated, but if that will give reliable internet access, I'd be open to it.
Are there any better options or anything else that I should consider? The main advantage for us of having the Cradlepoints is that we have cellular failover and it makes our wireless printing work seamlessly. The most stressful aspect is that we never know the network situation until we get to the site. I'm not there unfortunately, but I can use remote access to configure everything. I appreciate any help, ideas, etc.
ETA: I've resorted to using a TP-Link travel router for the WiFi as WAN functionality. I then run an ethernet cable from the TP-Link to the Cradlepoint's WAN. It works flawlessly on the TP-Link. I wish it worked that well on the Cradlepoint.
