Ranking the worlds

I’m 100% sure this has been done before and I’m new to this community and roughly new to reddit as a whole. But I want to do it anyway because I love engaging in discussion. Ranking the worlds is the topic for today and Im judging on four categories:
· Look/Atmosphere 10
· Music 10
· Story/Lore 10
· Combat 10
Everything is pretty self-explanatory but I’ll explain anyway, Look/Atmosphere is basically how good the world looks, Music, how good is the music of the world, Story/Lore, how good is the story of the world, and how do the hidden details of the world spice it up. Combat, is the combat balanced, does it deserve to be this difficult? So now with that out of the way lets get started.
  1. Zafaria
· Look/Atmosphere: 5
· Music: 6.5
· Story/Lore: 7
· Combat: 5
Zafaria is the only world in the game I regard as bad. It looks so barren and lifeless in my opinion. The music is practically the same throughout the majority of the world, I won’t deny that combat theme is just so good. But like everything else is just not good. The storyline doesn’t hold up at all, I get what they were going for, but like the whole deck of shadows plotline should’ve been introduced way earlier in the story, If I remember correctly we learn it in drum jungle, way late in the world. We don’t get any time with Morganthe as an antagonist in this world which is dumb, and two other worlds on this list have this issue, one suffers even more from it and the other actually enhances the story, but we’ll get there. My biggest problem with this world was when it was announced, Kingsisle was hyping this up to be the best world, with its advertising, they set up the spectral guardians as the big bads of this world even though we don’t see or hear of them until they final dungeon. The final boss, yeah it’s a spider, like a new type of spider, no, no its just a regular spider like the one in Krokotopia. Starburst spider is the worst final boss lets be honest. Combat is honestly ridiculously easy, Waterworks gear was OP at the time and bosses never got me below half my health on any wiz unless they crit. This is my least favorite in a lot of aspects however I will say it has a better story than Celestia. The one thing I’ll probably admit as a compliment of a world.
  1. Krokotopia
· Look/Atmosphere: 6
· Music: 7.5
· Story/Lore: 7
· Combat: 7
Every world from here and beyond is a world I like, and Krokotopia is just a world I don’t like as much as other worlds on this list. Krokotopia’s biggest problem for me is that every single area has a unique are of its own but beyond that its all the same, the same could go for the mobs in this world. Each type of krok is the same in each area, the mummies are dyed a different color, the warriors are just dyed a different color, but beyond that, I love this world and almost everything about it. The music is so good throughout all of it, the combat music slaps. This was the equation for how to continue the story, Zafaria failed at that, Krokotopia has interesting lore about the tuts and their evil schemes, Combat while not great is definitely a step up from Wizard City, the mobs and bosses get gradually more difficult so that’s a plus, and here is a neat little detail I found with the areas, Fire is second to storm in terms of battles, so The Pyramid Of The Sun is a medium long area. Ice is known to be slow in battles, The Krokosphinx is a really long area, storm is known to be quick in combat and the temple of storms is the fastest area in Krokotopia. I find that so smart. Krokotopia holds a special place in my heart, is it a masterpiece no, but it doesn’t need to be.
  1. Wizard City
· Look/Atmosphere: 7
· Music: 8.5
· Story/Lore: 6
· Combat: 6.5
There is something so nostalgic about Wizard City, from the areas to the music, it’s a world I would do over and over again, I’m talking about the old wizard city by the way, The new textures are great along with the updated soundtrack but nothing it has is better than the old fashioned way. I’m sad we can’t hear the Ravenwood theme in the new textures, it just has this theme of magic unlike anything I’ve seen in other magical games I’ve played, everything about Wizard City brings me back to a time of racing home to play it as much as possible. It’s a tutorial world so its not gonna be this hard world, were not racing to save the spiral just a few neighborhoods and that’s fine. That’s what a tutorial is supposed to be, overall calm and easy to understand. Wizard City definitely isn’t the best looking world, and I’m looking through this with an unbiased outlook so even though I treasure this world more than any world in the series I know a better world when I see it.
  1. Wysteria
· Look/Atmosphere: 8
· Music: 7.5
· Story/Lore: 6.5
· Combat: 7.5
I’d give this world the most fun award, this isn’t a world for getting good xp or a captivating storyline, this world exists for one thing and one thing only: to have fun. That’s all this world is. And it succeeds in every aspect of that goal, the idea of the world is so well thought of, yes it parodies Hogwarts, which is why I love it. The thought of going to another magical school is so brilliant and I’ve always taken time out of questing to go do this world. Everything about this world is so well round, it looks great, music is really well done, combat is a mix of easy and difficult at times. Story/Lore is its weakest aspect as this is the shortest world in the game, if it was longer I would have it way higher on this list, there is a bit of lore to it as it does foreshadow future worlds we visit like Avalon and Mirage which is neat.
  1. Empyrea
· Look/Atmosphere: 7.5
· Music: 8.5
· Story/Lore: 7
· Combat: 7
I know this a favorite for a lot of people and I can see why, I just think its overrated in almost every aspect, and overrated doesn’t mean bad in my eyes, Empyrea is a really good world, and Kingsisle tried to create an arthouse with this world with its cutscenes and dialogue, but the dialogue can drag on for a ridiculous amount of time. I like the new characters of the world a lot. Pork is my 3rd favorite traveling companion in the entire series. The Empyrea soundtrack is just so good, it makes the stakes really high throughout the world as the situation of the spiral worsens. However Combat is an issue for me, Part 1 definitely turns the heat up from Mirage, which is fine, Part 1 is manageable solo wise, Part 2 on the other hand is next to impossible to solo. I’m sure a lot of people can do it, I’ve soloed a fair amount of part 2 but a majority of the areas are things I can’t do on my own. Which brings combat down a lot for me as the gear available like Cabalist and Alphoi is meant for mobs and Dragoons and Vanguards is practically the same besides the boots which are god tier. Story and Lore is well thought out but the whole love between Spider and Raven was so cheesy for me and I honestly skipped through that. And lets talk about the “final boss”. Now the real final boss is the second to last one, but we are literally fighting a trident. I know the storm titan comes in every now and then but come on. I expected something much better. And the actual final fight is the exact same thing as the tutorial. Some see it as a neat callback, I don’t. A lot of people see Empyrea a masterpiece some hate it in its entirety and people like me are somewhere in between when it comes to this world, liking the journey but the ending just leaves you dissatisfied.
  1. Celestia
· Look/Atmosphere: 8
· Music: 8
· Story/Lore: 5
· Combat: 8.5
The first world of the second arc story, is the biggest mixed bag of the entire series for me. It excels in terms of looks combat and music and just drags with its story. The story in my opinion is the worst of the entire game. We hear about the plot of Morganthe’s deck like 3 areas before the end of the Zafaria, how bout for Celestia we’ll do the second to last one. Morganthe’s return is barely foreshadowed we just see what she did all those years ago. And poof she’s back for no known reason. The story doesn’t make sense, what are we doing, learning astral magic, stopping the crustacean empire, stopping Morganthe from learning astral magic? It is all over the place in terms of that, however this world’s ending does tie into the theme of failure as well as Zafaria and we’ll talk more about that later. Now lets talk about what works with this world: LITERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE, The world looks amazing, the music is some of the best in the entire series, the combat is difficult yet manageable. This world was the blueprint for every world in the future of this game, like really think about it, every world up to this point was the same textured map with little alterations to the coloring and layout. Celestia marked the beginning of that change, where every area in the world was unique and had similar features sure but were unique in their own right. Celestia is like the wheels on the shopping cart, 3 work great and that one broken wheel keeps it from moving.
  1. Aquila
· Look/Atmosphere: 7.5
· Music: 7
· Story/Lore: 8
· Combat: 8.5
I know what you’re thinking: This is not a world, you are an idiot. Aquila buried beneath the fact that it is just three dungeons, has so much lore and atmosphere. The mobs look amazing, a majority I’ve never seen before, the immortals look amazing, never before has something like this been done in the game. The gear you get here is essential so they are not going to make it easy on you, if you are teaming with just level 30’s Mt Olympus is pretty difficult and forces a team to really work together. Atlantea while not big on gear is still a really good dungeon. I’ll never do it again, but it was great and then the crown jewel of Aquila Tartarus. One of the best and most difficult dungeons in the game. Tartarus looks amazing from beginning to end, the gear here is not as essential besides the ring and athame, but still the gear is great. Also if I forgot to mention Aquila is where you get the most famous wand in the game, The Infamous Sky Iron Hosta, anyone with a brain knows you need this wand and if you hate crafting and buying crowns this wand is what you use up till probably Mirage or Polaris. The music is epic and the lore is great, all the details sprinkled throughout the lore of these dungeons is neat.
Now my personal top ten.
  1. Marleybone
· Look/Atmosphere: 8
· Music: 8
· Story/Lore: 7.5
· Combat: 7.5
This my personal favorite world, I love doing this world so much, No world in my biased eyes is better than it, I know there are worlds that are better than it but this world was so unique. Instead of fighting on the streets and ground we fight on the rooftops at night, the look is amazing, this is probably the closest we’ll get to going to Earth in this game. Marleybone’s music is so tightly woven and its combat theme is my personal favorite out of any world. Lore is not really here, but at least we get to see are antagonists throughout half of the world, they pose a threat that is actually intimidating unlike so many others. We have unique mobs unique to this world and this world alone (minus the robots) Big Ben was a dungeon unique as well. A tower that big was insane, I loved it, what an epic conclusion to an epic world, am I overhyping this world probably but in my eyes this world is just that good. The world is far more difficult than Krokotopia, the bosses you fought there, are now the mobs on the roofs. The health increases considerably so you need harness all your tools to beat this world. It gave a bit of a difficult time but now with the stakes being raised so should the difficulty.
  1. Polaris
· Look/Atmosphere: 8
· Music: 7.5
· Story/Lore: 8.5
· Combat: 8.5
Polaris was a good first world and as you can see it is the best first world of an arc. The main hub is my personal favorite hub out of all the worlds. The sights are amazing, like Borealis Peak, River Of Frozen Tears, combat is certainly unique, after finishing Khrysalis in Darkmoor gear, it made you wonder how they were gonna make it more difficult and they did, instead of just giving the mobs more health and higher damage spells they did the opposite, instead they gave them spells that would screw up our preconceived strategy. All bosses can tower shield now, they have damage output. They can plague and bad juju, fire mobs and bosses never stop spamming mantles, the combat of Polaris is so unique in its own right, they leveled the playing field with this world so now while you still have the better chance of winning you can’t win the normal way anymore. Character wise, I enjoy Ivan The Great an overall solid character. I cannot say the same for Mellori. One of if not my least favorite companion, she is not likable at all and she just stays a jerk throughout the entirety of the 3rd arc and now suddenly she’s not a jerk. It makes no sense, there is no redemption for her in my eyes. Rasputin is a compelling antagonist who always seems to be one step ahead of us which is neat. Even after all the nerfs he is still a tough battle to beat. Polaris has its flaws but it started the 3rd arc on a high note.
  1. Dragonspyre
· Look/Atmosphere: 9
· Music: 9
· Story/Lore: 8
· Combat: 7.5
What a world to say the least, this was the equation for how to do a grand finale. This world is the embodiment of evil, the music is equally menacing and carries the drive of reaching the end. Dragonspyre has the cleanest soundtrack out of any world. And while Marleybone’s combat theme is my favorite Dragonspyre’s is without a doubt the best. The story is gives us perspective in the game’s main antagonist. Making the eventual final battle of Dragonspyre compelling. I love how our main guide is Cyrus Drake. This world is paced so well, the difficulty is fair, this was intended to be the final world of the game, of course bosses have 8k of course average mobs have over 1k. Its just how this works now, it is supposed to be a challenge. My biggest issue and probably only issue is that the towers are the most annoying thing ever, I have to spend so much gold on potions because there is so many towers in this world, they aren’t fun, they’re irritating. Also the great spyre was underwhelming we have to fight 3 mobs then Malistaire and that’s it? If every fight was required then you’d have a perfect finale, regardless it was still great. There will never be a world like Dragonspyre ever again a finale built up so well and ever so satisfying.
  1. Mirage
· Look/Atmosphere: 7
· Music: 8.5
· Story/Lore: 9
· Combat: 9
Mirage was a world when I started I hated with a passion but overtime it grew on me more than any world. Mirage is the best of the 3rd arc because of its characters and storytelling. Istar is my favorite companion mostly because my accuracy was trash in Mirage cause I went all out on damage and crit. But the characters are more interactive than ever in this world, and while Mirage is a dull barren wasteland that’s the point of this world. And even then there are some areas that look really good like the sands of time, Istanboa, Tetrus Prison. This world had a lot of effort put into it. And this is a world that presented a real challenge, I hadn’t struggled this much since Azteca. Bosses cheats are really hard and mobs at times can present a challenge. And normally I’m not a fan of hard combat for no reason but here I didn’t mind it that much. The music here is so good and the combat themes of this world slap. They are so good. I love how we pretty much go into Jabbas Palace. A lot of people have told me Mirage’s story is just copy and paste of Polaris, but I’d say its more of an evolution of it. This world subverted my expectations, I expected to fight the scorpion as the boss, but they threw that preconceived notion out the window. This world subverted my expectations and eventually surpassed them.
  1. Mooshu
· Look/Atmosphere: 9
· Music: 8.5
· Story/Lore: 9
· Combat: 7
Mooshu is the crown jewel of the 1st arc and arguably wizard101 as a whole for many players, from here on out we get into the mastercrafts of worlds. The world is gorgeous, the music is gorgeous, and the story and lore is teeming with life. While it is integral to the plot of stopping Malistaire Mooshu is about more than that, saving an entire kingdom from ruin, we encounter new mobs and one my favorite the oni’s never before have I seen anything like them, they are just so cool, each and everyone of them represent the final boss of an area, and their powers tie into the evil plot they put on the land. This in my opinion is where cheating bosses should’ve started it would’ve so interesting seeing these bosses use unique abilities in combat. Speaking of which, combat while pretty balanced is just Marleybone mobs with a small increase and I mean small increase in health. While some prefer it, I prefer a challenge. And we did get that with the jade oni, imagine when this game came out, you reach this final boss after fighting average 1500-2000 health bosses then seeing this behemoth with 7500 HP. I soloed all those years ago and it took everything I had to take him down, while there is no hint of another oni being present in the game, I had a feeling when playing this the Death Oni wasn’t the end as it felt to easy to be the final boss. Mooshu was a world that can be described with one word: unforgettable. It’s a world so much of this community adores.
  1. Grizzleheim/Wintertusk
· Look/Atmosphere: 9
· Music: 9.5
· Story/Lore: 10
· Combat: 7.5
This world went all out, when it never needed to, Grizzleheim was a world designed to for players to have something to do if they finished the game, and yet no world before the 2nd arc had such beautiful design, the music was both beautiful and powerful. Norse mythology is one of my favorite mythologies. All the call backs like Nidavellir and Helheim with Nastrond just made me grin. The combat for Grizzleheim is all over the place which makes sense as only certain areas are for certain levels which is a darn shame, I’d like to access an entire world all at once, not wait ten or fifteen levels. Wintertusk and I say this with full confidence is the hardest world in the game. Think about it, You go to Wintertusk at level 40, your average mob is between 600-900 health. Your very first mob in Wintertusk has near 2000. The level of difficulty this area has shouldn’t be underestimated. Your bosses went from average 1500 to 8000. I tried doing this world without astral magic, but I’ve found it near impossible. Going in with level 40 gear and level 40 spells only was a challenge, but the reward was worth it. While Wintertusk doesn’t offer as much in terms of lore it is near or equal in terms of everything else Grizzleheim has. Grizzleheim was a surprise for sure but a welcome one.
  1. Darkmoor
· Look/Atmosphere: 10
· Music: 9
· Story/Lore: 8
· Combat: 10
“Oh great another dungeon being counted as a world” is what you’re probably saying. But Darkmoor is the single best dungeon ever created. And technically Darkmoor is said to be a world in the spiral so. Anyways Darkmoor is the darkest the series has ever gotten, all the dialogue is not meant for children, look at where the game started and look at this, you can tell this was when they started going for a more mature audience with their storytelling. Darkmoor looks amazing, all the detailing that went into this is phenomenal. Every part of it looks so good. The mobs while retextured versions of old mobs don’t bring much new life give terror as these are some the hardest mobs in the entire game. I know there are try hards who have soloed this but this a dungeon that brings everyone to work together as a single unit. The reward for this dungeon is the best set of gear we have and possibly will ever receive. Malistaire is an antagonist most have gotten tired of seeing but let me just say not only is this the most haunting and compelling version of Malistaire, it is the best antagonist this game has ever seen, someone so consumed by hatred and shadow and will do everything in his power to destroy us. And to see him let it all go for the greater good of Sylvia is just amazing. Never before has an antagonist just let go of their hatred. I’m sorry Grandfather Spider but your redemption made no sense and had no build up. Darkmoor is the stepping stone to best gear and spells and also some of the best storytelling this game can offer.
  1. Avalon
· Look/Atmosphere: 9.5
· Music: 9
· Story/Lore: 9
· Combat: 10
Avalon is another world beloved by fans, after the train wreck that was Zafaria, Kingsisle took a step back and remembered what made this game special in the first place. And they came up with this thing of beauty. We are wizards, eventually we’d go to a world with knights, dragons and kings, it’s the bread and butter of magic. The effort that went into this world is astounding. Everything from the areas to the music is amazing. In terms of combat, this in my opinion is the best. The combat knew when to present a challenge and allow the story flow so smoothly. The characters here are colorful. From Queen Gwendolyn to Sir Malory. Each are integral to the plot and help it progress. The world looks amazing, and my personal favorite being The Wyrd. Oh and lets talk about the boss that invented rage quits. Jabberwock when he first came out was the most ridiculous thing I ever saw. A boss that 3000 every 3 rounds was insane, back then you needed a full team to take him down. They nerfed him a ton sure but he was the most memorable boss of that world. Remember when I said one world excelled even though they didn’t had the main antagonist at all. Avalon succeeds because Morganthe’s evil plan has already been done, were not trying to stop Morganthe she won already, were just trying to reverse this. And the build up to achieving this is amazing. We get to see a bit on how Morganthe became the monster she is now and how Avalon fell. My key issue like Zafaria is the final boss. I expected an epic battle with Pendragon and we sorta got that, it wasn’t that hard of a fight. But no the final fight is a two on one fight with two random dragons. This isn’t as bad as Zafaria because they have a purpose to the plot but I expected something better than that. Avalon got Wizard101 back on track as the next two worlds they put out are worlds I hold in an even higher regard.
  1. Azteca
· Look/Atmosphere: 9
· Music: 9.5
· Story/Lore: 10
· Combat: 9.5
This world gets more hate out of any world. When it deserves none of that. Not many see this world for the masterpiece it is. The theme of the 2nd arc is failure, we can’t stop Morganthe from learning astral magic, we failed to stop her reclaiming the deck of shadows, we get a bit of a break as we save Avalon and get the sword of kings. Then there’s Azteca. We fail. And unlike all other worlds before, because of out failure an entire world dies. All the people while the game doesn’t show it, they die. This is the equivalent to the empire strikes back. It shatters the preconceived notion that we the hero will always win in the end, when in actuality we don’t. Morganthe has won every battle up to this point. It shares a similarity to Majoras Mask, were trying to stop this giant space object from crashing down in a specific amount of time. But unlike Majoras Mask, we don’t succeed. This was when the story of Wizard101 got dark and mature and went from this game for ten year olds into a mature captivating story. Now everyone’s number one complaint with this world is the difficulty. We are in a world about to endure an apocalypse of course its going to be hard. This in my opinion is the second hardest world in the game. The health of bosses and mobs literally doubles. They know more advanced spells than us right off the bat, they have mastery now. Unlike Empyrea this while harder than ever still isn’t unfair. The combat forced me to think hard more than ever before, which was something I loved, being on the edge of my seat not knowing if I was going to win or lose, tying into the narrative of not knowing if we can save Azteca. Now with all the technical stuff out of the way, Azteca is one of if not the most beautiful looking worlds in the game. Cloudburst forest is one of the most gorgeous areas the game has ever produced. The world was teeming with life and the music was integrated so well. Knowing when to be frightening and fast paced and when to slow down and enjoyable. Xibalba’s concept was amazing, were fighting on a literal comet. They give us the idea that we still have a chance when in actuality we don’t. Also I don’t really hate the Malistaire is back, I knew it when I saw his grave, it was so obvious from the dialogue to his new look. I get why he was brought back, Morganthe couldn’t revive those aztecasaurs on her own and she needed help. Azteca is a world I can go on and on about why its an underrated masterpiece, and the game designers made me wonder how they were gonna finish this story, at the time I thought there was no way they can top this
And yet they did.
Using process of elimination you can probably guess what my number one world is.
  1. Khrysalis
· Look/Atmosphere: 9.5
· Music: 10
· Story/Lore: 10
· Combat: 9
Kingsisle was so obsessed with creating an arthouse for Empyrea they didn’t realize they already made one. Khrysalis’s artistic merit should not be understated. Everything about is flawless or near it. I loved the concept of us being a spy and sabotaging their operations from within. To quote Diego The Duelmaster: “Khrysalis is a savage world a dead world” Similar to Avalon Morganthe won here already, the entire world belongs to her. We are basically a fly trapped in her web. The bosses are not as hard as Azteca nor are the mobs offering a more balanced combat to allow the story to flow at a slow pace. Istar while my favorite will never outmatch the sheer brilliance that is Dyvim Whitehart. The dynamic we have with him is amazing. We get to go jewels hidden in the sands like the Last Wood. Some bosses do present a challenge especially the 3 on 1 fights which are pretty common in Part 1. I love our introduction to shadow magic and we are reminded of our failure in Azteca and to learn shadow magic we must confront that failure and fear head on, I didn’t a world in this game would go there but it did. Bastion Thrives is without a doubt the best piece of music the game has, giving a somber theme yet buried in it is a piece of hope, which is what Khrysalis as a whole is all about, even though we reached our lowest point, we have nowhere to go but up. The warlords present a challenge so unique, I remember struggling with Kravenly so much my first run of the game the same with Ghost Dog. The world goes into pretty dark places, like who expected Dyvim to be thrown out a window and left to die. I didn’t. The story holds nothing back which I love. Part 2 can drag out a bit but its still engaging, I love our success in defeating Morganthe brought an even greater threat with Grandfather Spider. Everyone loves to say Morganthe’s death was so cheap, I see it as a metaphor for how she just stole power and refused to learn and earn it and it consumed her and that was her downfall. Khrysalis stands tall above all other worlds for its ambition, storytelling and willingness to go place I never thought the story would go.
How would you rank the worlds.
