To catch y’all up: My dad died a few weeks ago. While going through all the mementos of his life that he held onto for years, we found the diaries his mom (Grandmother) kept detailing the hate she held for my mom (my dad’s only wife until his death). The woman was just a bitter twit. She died 14 years ago and these are still hanging out around the house. So we read them.
After talking to Laura tonight at dinner, we believe that he did not intentionally keep the diaries. We think he never opened the pouch they were in and the box was then packed away in our attic and ultimately forgotten. There were several of his mother's things we came across that we don't think he ever fully explored the contents of, rather just put away to deal with later. And later was always postponed.

The Cast: entitled crazy lady= Grandmother (the authonarrator of said diaries)
my dad= Jimmy Jones (only child)
my dad's father= Jim Jones (died in 2001 at the age of 92. Most of “his opinions” expressed in the diaries were the opinions that Grandmother gave him without consulting him first.)
my mom= Laura Washington Jones
my mom's father= George Washington (World War 2 veteran, and badass. Currently 95 years young.)
my mom's mother= Martha Washington (died about 10 years ago of Alzheimer's)
my mom's sister= Clara Washington Smith
New cast members: Otto, Vera, and Camille Kirkland= Grandmother’s cousins.
Eric= my dad’s best friend
Julie and Elroy= friends of Grandmother
Robert (and Sharon) Goodman= former business partner of my dad (and his wife).
The Logans= friends of Grandmother who lived in [MyCity].
Raymond Potter= friend of Jim’s who lived in [MyCity]
We clued in George and Clara this weekend about the diaries and their names being mentioned in them. George laughed and said she was a tough one to have around. And he liked her about as much as she liked him. Clara (who is mentioned more in other years’ diaries) could not seem to wrap her head around how someone could be as bitter as Grandmother- and bitter about such petty things.
None of us fully realized the depth in her soul where she held this kind of hate for Laura- it seemed to consume her entirely. And there was no event to ignite this type of hate, other than my dad wanted to marry my mom.
Things to know as you read this set of diary entries: Laura did agree on one point Grandmother makes: the temperature in the church that day was hot.
Grandmother and Big Jim were asked to stay at Laura and Jimmy’s house while they were away on their honeymoon for a week. The events she documents following the wedding itself all take place in the same city as the wedding.
Her country vocabulary and idioms make some appearances in these entries. If you are perplexed by anything that may seem weird, I am more than happy to clarify. And, as always, I keep her grammar and spelling choices in place to give you the full experience of reading the diaries.
Let’s dive into the wedding week entires:: The year is still 1979
June 4 Monday Sames as every Monday
Tues. June 5 Helped Jim trim the yard and get ready to be gone a week.
June 6 Wed Went to [Small Nearby City] had my hair styled for the Rehearsal party to be held on Friday Nite
Thursday June 7 Stopped paper
“ mail
Cut the grass
Jimmy Called and said that Otto, Vera, and Camille were in [MyCity].
June 8 Friday Went to [MyCity] to Host The rehearsal Dinner at the [EventSpace] Overlooking the [BodyofWater].
Otto, Vera, and Camille attended this affair. Otto agreed with me that the family was indeed happy to be getting Jimmy Jones as a Son in law. Then I felt like that I wasn’t alone in what I could see.
All the Boys came for the Wedding with their wives and stayed at the Motel with us. They were so sweet to me. I think they all could see how hurt I was. The girls could read my mind. Mr. Washington told us it was a nice Dinner but I heard nothing from Martha.
June 9. Sat. Day of wedding. After cry ing all night Friday nite.
The [FarAwayCity] Kirklands came to comfort me. We stayed around the Motel all morning. I ask to be alone all afternoon. I wanted to cry all my tears away. We arrived at the church way ahead of time. It was so hot in there I nearly fainted. No one invited me in where it was cool and where others were dressing. I just roamed the hot hall ways until the music started. Eric came to get me to make what I fell would be my last walk with life. After seeing some of my loyal [HerTown] friends, it helped so much. I didn’t hear a word the minister said for trying to hold back the tears. I just about missed the reception completely. While they kept me in to take pictures. I never could figure out why they kept me so long because they only took two pictures and they had already taken both of them while everyone else was in there. But Martha told me she would go on and save me some cake. Well she failed to do that. When they turned me loose in the picture room, I not only did not get a piece of cake, I never even got to see it. Well the cameras were flowing like wine in the reception rooms. I asked Laura to let me see her ring I never did understand what she meant or what she said. Something about them taking a picture. Well that could have well been because that was the most provoking thing I ever witnessed. (Down right silly)
I couldn’t find anyone that I thought was so photogenic. I ask Jimmy to show me his Grooms Cake and he said it was gone.. But they took a picture of it. That I can believe because of busy cameras I hate to think what the picture man will charge for that. Julie and Elroy came. True Blue they have always been.
The Boys and Sharon Goodman were wonderful. She is a charming girl and seemed as tho she could feel my hurt.
{the pen and stroke style change here, so I assume this next paragraph was added at a different time than the main entry} Laura’s dress would have looked OK It was not an expensive dress and it was very skimpy. If it had fit her, It would have looked better. Her hair looked like a mop or the head of the Raggy Ann Doll. It was nearly as orange in color as the same doll. I don’t guess her parents can do any thing with her. But they could at least have tried long ago before it was to late. Martha said she had always been a problem.
Monday June 11 Jim and I did our laundry. Went out to lunch at [Restaurant] and shopped some at [LocalDepartmentStore]. I am so hurt within that I can’t seem to put it all over. I’m trying to figure out what is best for me to do with my time so I won’t grieve myself to death.
Tuesday June 12 Jim and I went shopping and looking for things we can’t find at home.
I bought a red bag and two blouses. We had lunch at [same restaurant as yesterday].
We walked every afternoon to walk off the amount we eat everyday.
Martha called and wanted me to listen while she (remanisced) the wedding, reception & etc. She is so happy about it all. And she sure has every right to be. The whole bunch really worked at getting that job tended to. She said it was the happiest day of her life. So she had the happiest day of her life at the expense of the SADDESS day of mine. She is some kind of nut.
Jim had dinner with Sharon and Robert & they payed pool. I spent the night with the Logan’s.
Wednesday June 13 Spent Tuesday Nite with The Logans. Mrs Logan told me when they redecorated they wanted me to get the marble top Table they promised. But Frank would be awfully hurt if I gave it to anyone. So I promised that I would not ever give it to anyone. He has not accepted Jimmy’s marriage any better than I have. He cannot understand it.
Jim went to see Raymond Potter and he carried him everywhere. We trimmed the yard to get ready to cut the grass.
Thursday June 14 We trimmed front & back shrubs & etc. Cut the grass and set out to find some things people had told us that we might find. Sharon Goldman called to check on us. Pam from the office called to see if we needed anything. We made our usual stroll, eat our ice cream & watched television then to bed.
Friday June 15 Up early prepared Jim’s breakfast. Raymond came by and they have gone fishing down in [Region to the south]. I sure hope he has a big time.
I’m washing up things around that so bad need it. The Cat is a beautiful cat but keeps their house with cat hairs and an odor on & in every thing.
Jim got home from fishing and reported a big time. 19 breams.
Sat. June 16 Up and breakfast. Went over and spent the afternoon with the Logans.
They are dear friends. They are worried about having to move or buy their apartment.
Left there and went to [CafeteriaStyleRestaurant] for dinner. Food was delicious.
Sunday June 17 Up & had breakfast. Went to church at [NotWeddingChurchName]. Was a sweet small church. The people were so nice. Makes us want to go back.
Went home and rested until time to pick up Jimmy & Laura. Met them at 4 o’clock Came home unloaded their things and went to eat at [CafeteriaStyleRestaurant]. They were starved. They had a 4 hr lay over in Miami Airport. Came home packed our things in the car and took off home. Arrived home around 7 o’clock. Brian and Charmaine came up to tell us they missed us. Went to bed early.
{the pen changes here, so I assume this next bit was added in after the fact} When the children got off the plane I have never seen anyone so tired looking. The garb Laura had on would have stopped an 8 day clock. “Pitiful”
I’ll end there for today.
