Best dirt cheap software/dongle to use with pc+Akai APC Mini
So, here's the deal. I volunteer as the lighting guy at the university nightclub. Today we run all the lights on an avolites pearl 2000 that I recently updated to the 2004 software. Amazing upgrade (not really). I actually really like the pearl but it is showing its age and there are some details I really can't work around if I want to make the shows I want to. The biggest being not having enough simultaneous playbacks to allow me to flash enough groups while busking.
Anywho I've decided to build something pc based and mobile so I can take on smaller gigs for myself. I think the apc mini would be a great midi controller to base it around. I was hoping to get a titan one (which is still out of my budget) but it seems that I need osimidi to hook up a midi controller and that is another 100$ which I simply dont have. I looked into daslight 4 which seems great for mapping a controller but there I need their proprietary dongle which is almost 500$ so again I'm out of luck.
What I'm looking for is a good enough, easy to use (preferably free, or next to it) software that can take a midi controller and use something like a Chinese 20$ usb-dmx dongle to deliver a full universe.
Is this even doable for under 200$ sans controller and laptop? Edit:
For anyone finding this in the future I went with Martin M-PC, a chinese sACN node (4 universes), the APC Mini and an Icon iControls Pro with 9 motorized faders for my private setup. I also bought a cheap 1 universe usb2dmx dongle that I've confirmed works with M-PC. I'm also currently evaluating using an xbox controller with M-PC to use a couple of movers as follow spots. Really cool stuff!
For the night club we put 2 eDMX4 Pro DIN on the network. One on stage, configured with 3 universes out and one in, so it can merge the old DMX line with sACN/ArtNet, and one unit at FOH, translating 3 DMX universes from the old Pearl to sACN/ArtNet. So now we can merge the DMX from the Pearl, letting it do what it does good, with the output from M-PC, using that for effects like color wipes etc and controlling LED-bars. All working like an absolute charm!
