Why Win10 is trash.

Just admit it. Windows 10 is trash. Here are my reasons:
  1. Consistency:
Theres no consistency in Windows 10. Not in icons, where there's like a hundred different styles, there's also Win32 and .NET/C# apps all mixed up, with the Win32 ones needing injections just for theming support, its all a fucking mess.
  1. Microsoftware/Privacy/Control
If you use Windows 10, Microsoft probably owns you. You can't fully disable windows defender, windows update is EXTREMELY forced and theres Microsoft Spyware that you can't fully disable, and the stuff you CAN disable you have to literally look everywhere in settings. Come on guys, Ubuntu has literally one checkbox to disable all telemetry. Hell, now you can't even create a user account in windows without a Microsoft account.
  1. Locked-down-ness/Customization
Windows is extremely locked down. For theming you need patchers, rainmeter, and you need to go surfing external websites and a lot of deviantart just to find themes.
Let's take KDE Plasma for comparison. You can literally apply full system themes in 4 clicks: Open system settings, click Look and Feel, select your global theme and BOOM. Login screen (SDDM), splash screen, application style - all adjusted. No need for rainmeters - it natively supports widgets on the desktop. Hell, you can literally remove all Taskbars, change how big and wide the taskbar is, theres also an official dock app, you can choose how application window titles are aligned, you can choose how and where the buttons in the title bar are positioned, you can change the color of the window frame, literally everything - customizable. They even have their own store for themes.
And that's just the official KDE stuff. You also have stuff like Kvantum and they don't break on each update.
What do you get from Microsoft? Enable dark mode, change system color and change the wallpaper. Anything extra? Patchers that break on every update, rainmeter themes that are super laggy, that sorta crap.
  1. Updates
Windows update is TERRIBLE. It can force you to upgrade from Win7 to Win10, hell windows update can interrupt your gaming stream.
Linux? Oh sure we will just update the entire core of the system and the kernel in the background without a restart go back to your game now :)
  1. Price
Windows - Starts at 100$, ends at 1000$ GNU/Linux or *BSD - Most distros are free
  1. Security/Applications
Windows is SUPER vulnerable BY DESIGN.
You have to go digging into the internet to find the installer for that one application and then every single application will have an auto-updater that start each time you boot your computer.
And some installers even come with adware/spyware like Mccaffe stuff and web toolbars.
Sure, theres the microsoft store but you need an Micro$oft account to download anything and a lot of the apps you know and love either aren't there or the version that is there is just a dumbed down version to comply with MS Store rules and locked-downness of UWP.
Then theres linux where you can apt-get whatever your heart desires. Instead of dumbed-down versions in the stores, there's REAL SOFTWAE like Firefox, LibreOffice, GIMP, Inkscape, LMMS, VS Code, and other software that isn't just a dumbed-down version, meaning you don't have to look on shady websites just to get that one app.
  1. Choice
On windows, you don't get a lot of choice. What you get is the default login screen and explorer.exe
On linux - Like that other package manager more than this one? Sure, hop distros. Like that Desktop Environment more than your current one? Sure, swap it out! Hell, you can even swap out the kernel in Manjaro with a few clicks.
On windows, you're stuck with what Micro$oft gives you. On Linux you have a LOT of choice
There are a LOT more reasons and I could keep going on, but I'll let you figure out the rest your self.
Some AMAZING linux distributions for you to hop on to: (not in any particular order)
Ubuntu (I prefer Kubuntu over Ubuntu) Kubuntu Lubuntu pop_OS! Manjaro Linux Fedora Workstation
For the advanced users (advanced in Linux, not windows):
Arch Linux Manjaro Linux Architect Gentoo Linux Void Linux

Building my first PC for casual gaming, very overwhelmed by options and staying in budget

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
  • Fairly casual gaming. Some games that I've played a lot of or would like to play include the Dragon Age trilogy, the Mass Effect series, Pillars of Eternity, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, The Sims 4, and some party games like the Jackbox series and Overcooked. I don't need HD graphics or streaming capabilites for any of these, I just want to play them on medium-ish graphics while also running Discord in the background without everything freezing.
  • I used to do some photo editing and such (I use GIMP, Inkscape, and Luminar 3) but I haven't been able to since my laptop can't handle it anymore; I'd like to get back into it, but it's a really casual thing, I don't need anything near what a professional photographer would need
  • Word processing, internet browsing, Discord, MuseScore 3, PCStitch 11, watching YouTube/Netflix, videoconferencing (Roll20, Google Hangouts, Zoom, because we live in the corona times), ideally being able to do more than one of these at once without lag
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
  • I guess about 900$ CAD? I'm aiming to keep the whole thing under 1000$ including shipping and taxes, but I don't know how realistic that is; I'd be willing to pay a little more, up to maybe 1200$, but I really want to try to stay under budget here
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
  • My plan was to buy the parts over the next month (assuming shipping will take forever) and build it in late August when my roommate can help me (he's built PCs before)
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
  • Nearly everything. Definitely tower, OS, monitor, and keyboard.
  • I have a USB mouse that works fine but could probably be upgraded if it fits in the budget.
  • If the monitor doesn't have built-in speakers, I'll need some external ones.
  • I guess monitors don't come with webcams like laptops do, so that might be a useful add-on, but it's not something I need right away, either.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
  • Ontario, Canada. I'm planning on buying everything online,.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
  • My mouse is a Logitech M310
  • I have an external hard drive, I believe it's a WD 4TB one (don't have it with me at the moment). I got it as a gift like 5 years ago and have never really used it, but I probably should.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
  • I don't quite understand what overclocking is and whether it's a desirable thing or not
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
  • Backlit wired keyboard (preferably lit white or blue, or one that can be changed)
  • I need quite a bit of storage but I think my external hard drive + basic storage on the PC will be enough. My current laptop has 929 GB of storage and I'm using 490.8 GB of it (I don't have all my games installed), if that's a good reference for how much I need.
  • I'd like something as quiet as reasonably possible. My laptop has a weird irregular clicking noise that I want to avoid with my next computer.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
  • I need something that can keep my cats out. So nothing that's open or that has gaps that paws can fit through, with a minimal amount of cords sticking out.
  • I also want something with minimal lights. I kinda hate things that have LEDs when they're not in use and have trouble sleeping in a room with any kind of light.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
  • Yes, Windows 10, and I think I need 64 bit? Not sure.
Extra info or particulars:
  • I'm also in need of a new power bar for my laptop (ASUS K501UB) because the cord on my current one is almost literally hanging on by a thread (thanks, cats)
  • My roommates and I have been talking about getting a projector as an alternative to getting a TV, since we have a flat white wall in our living room
  • So it might be good to buy those things at the same time, especially if they fit into my budget (though I assume my roommates will split the cost of the projector with me)
  • The reason I'm building a PC is because my laptop has been slowing down over the past few years, and it's at a point where it can't even handle a Zoom call or playing The Sims 4 on the lowest graphics settings without freezing, whereas I used to be able to play Dragon Age: Inquisition on high graphics with no issue. I don't know which parts are fried. I've tried cleaning the dust, and it hasn't helped. The plan is to build a PC for games and heavier stuff like photo editing, so that I can remove stuff from my laptop and restrict it to basic stuff like word processing when I'm on campus or in coffee shops (if I'm ever able to leave the house again lol)
