Chrome OS Dev channel was updated to 86.0.4217.0 a few weeks ago. This is what changed!

_All right crew!

The Chrome OS Dev channel had a big update a few weeks ago — from 86.0.4208.0 to 86.0.4217.0. Awesome!!

This was a big update with a total of 2977 changes (excluding platform updates) that rolled out to most Chromebooks. This build brought several new functionality changes along with a slew of bug fixes and quality-of-life changes. Note: this is NOT the latest Chrome OS Dev channel build available for users; I'm still working on it (spoilers: also quite a big update!). If you find a mistake, discover something new that's not on this list, or have feedback, feel free to let me know in the comments below.

Like my content and want to buy me a coffee? You can support me on ko-fi using this link or by using the link in my Reddit profile. If you want to be kept up to date with everything new to Chrome OS, feel free to give me a follow. Thanks in advance for your support!! :)

Notable changes in this build

The following covers the notable changes I found with this version of Chrome OS. Bullet points in bold are changes I believe are significant.

Accessibility
  • Switch access: Fixed a bug where the Switch Access status tray menu does not appear.
  • ChromeVox: printer status will be announced
Ambient Lockscreen
  • General polish to the overall experience, including adding a fade in/out animation when exiting Ambient, fixing the black screen issue, and fixing the abrupt flash of the first slideshow image.
Ash
  • Stylus/IME: refreshed the Stylus tools and Input methods menu UI to look more consistent to Chrome OS’ current design.

New Input methods menu UI
New Stylus tools menu UI

  • Multipaste: the enhanced clipboard feature will no longer share history between different user accounts. This further builds the groundwork of the upcoming Chrome OS clipboard feature coming to Chromebooks, which you can try out yourself by enabling chrome://flags/#enhanced_clipboard. Invoke by copying a text and pressing Search + V. Click here to see 9to5Google's screenshot of what it looks like!
  • Login screen: fixed a bug where the sign-in error notification with sign out button could show up even after logging into the user account with a new password.
  • Login screen: fixed a bug where clicking “Browse as Guest” from the “Network not available” window does not do anything.
  • Login/Lock screen: Managed accounts will have a device management disclosure on the login and lock screen.
  • Overview mode: Chrome OS will block the full-screen button during Overview mode’s start animation.
  • Night Light: fixed Guest account not retrieving the correct geolocation, which prevented the auto sunrise/sunset night-light from firing.
  • App Grid: fixed folders not scaling down to 84% correctly when dragging an app around the app drawer. The experimental feature that shrinks the icons can be toggled on by enabling chrome://flags/#enable-launcher-app-paging.
  • Status Tray: revamped the Managed Device UI to show more information when the device is managed.
  • Status tray: slightly tweaked the outline battery icon.

The lightning bold should be more visible

  • Status Tray: the Chromebook microphone will be unmuted if you move the slider while the microphone is muted.
  • Shelf: fixed a bug where the contextual menu for site shortcuts always displays “New Tab” regardless of user preference.
  • Power menu: prevent a duplicate start animation from playing if the power button is pressed in the middle of the power menu animation.
Chrome
  • Tab Search: new experimental tab search feature that makes it easy to search for tabs when the tabstrip is filled. It adds a drop-down arrow next to the New tab icon - clicking on it brings a search bar and a vertical list of tabs open. Ctrl + Shift + E will eventually bring the tab search bar feature out. A nice little trick you can do is use the drown-down arrow to quickly switch to the terminal app. To try this feature out, enable chrome://flags/#enable-tab-search.

Quick demo of the tab search feature

  • PDF viewer update: the new PDF viewer’s buttons are now functional, allowing you to do very basic one-page management with a PDF. Note: scrolling to the next page, page thumbnails, and outline view is not working! Take a look at the new refreshed PDF viewer by enabling chrome://flags/#pdf-viewer-update.

PDF revamp - it's now functional!

  • Printer status: The Printer status feature flag is enabled by default. This allows Chrome OS users to check the status of their printer and nearby printers with the Print preview page.
  • Read Later: new Chrome feature flag that allows you to save tabs for later so that you can quickly switch gears and focus on something else. This could be useful if you find an interesting cooking recipe online while researching something else, but you don’t want to focus on the recipe right away. This feature is not working yet. When the functional code lands in a future build, try it out by enabling chrome://flags/#read-later.
  • Passwords settings: fixed a bug where removing a password at chrome://settings/passwords could visually remove the wrong password.
  • Tab Group collapse: new Chrome feature flag that freezes the tabs inside of a tab group when the tab group is collapsed, which helps save resources. To try this feature out, enable chrome://flags/#tab-groups-collapse-freezing.
  • Chrome settings: fixed Standard protection content in background scrolls automatically when clicking on the 'cancel' button several times.
  • Permissions: fixed several instances where the permission icons and bullet points have a red color.
  • Chrome OS Print Preview: reduced the printer status error text font size and removed the weight.
  • Global Media Controls: new feature flag that allows Global Media controls to control when a Casting session is active or inactive instead of relying on the Cast dialog. Test this feature by enabling chrome://flags/#globla-media-controls-cast-start-stop.
Chrome OS Settings
  • Display Identification: the display identification feature flag is back to enabled by default. This helps Chromebook users with multi-monitor setups to identify which display they are configuring by drawing a blue border on the screen. The blue border will show when dragging the display in the display layout section.

Display Identification in action. Also includes a neat display notifier indicator on the sides informing what display you're moving the window on.

  • Multi-profile: fixed a serious bug where switching users will crash Chrome OS.
  • Metered Network: the metered network feature flag is now enabled by default, which allows Chrome OS to consume less background data on the metered network when the user toggles it on.
  • Phone Hub: new feature flag that allows users to view information about their Android phone and perform side actions within Chrome OS. This will work similar to the Your Phone app on Windows and (possibly) KDEConnect on Linux. This feature is not working yet on this build of Chrome OS. When it’s ready to test, try it out by enabling chrome://flags/#enable-phone-hub.
  • Polymer3: new experimental feature flag that upgrades Chrome OS settings from Polymer 2 to Polymer 3. This is purely a back-end change that shouldn’t make a noticeable difference. Warning: enabling chrome://flags/#os-settings-polymer3 will break Chrome OS Settings for now!
  • Metered network: moved the toggle into the “Advanced” dropdown in network settings.
  • Touchpad: changed the behavior of the reverse scrolling toggle. When the toggle is disabled, swiping up on the touchpad moves the page up. When the toggle is enabled, swiping up on the touchpad moves the page down.
  • Cellular: fixed a bug where searching for cellular queries in Chrome OS setting’s search bar crashes Chrome OS. Note that this crash did not affect too many people as the vast majority of Chromebooks do not have cellular capabilities.
  • ToS: Fixed a bug where clicking “Terms of Service” in about Chrome OS opens Terms of Service within Chrome OS Settings, not a new Chrome tab.
Display
  • HDR: Chrome OS now supports HDR out-of-the-box. This allows HDR-ready displays like the one on the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook and external HDR monitors to take advantage of HDR content.
  • HDR: amplify the HDR level multiplier on Chrome OS so that the bright areas of HDR videos are not overexposed and maintain local contrast. Note: these changes only apply to HDR-ready displays found on the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook and HDR-capable external monitors. If your Chromebook display or external monitor is not HDR capable, this change does nothing.
  • HDR: changed the SDR contrast and brightness ratios. SDR content will have a bit more brightness (25% increase) and a bit more gamma correction (1.25).Note: these changes only apply to HDR-ready displays found on the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook and HDR capable external monitors. If your Chromebook display or external monitor is not HDR capable, this change does nothing.
Explore app
  • Updated the Explore app to a flatter, vibrant icon with more Google Material theme styling.

Old Explore app icon
New Explore app icon

  • Fixed a bug where launching the Explore app from an incognito browser via shortcut or menu item crashes Chrome OS
Input
  • IMEMozcProto: relanded the feature flag back to enable by default. This feature was originally pulled due to several reports of Kana and Hiragana breaking.
Linux (Beta)
  • Disk resizer: the disk resizer will use nice round numbers for ticks on the disk resize sliders (example: 0.1GB, 0.2GB, 0.3GB).
  • Termina: fixed a bug where the Terminal would not launch if the user blocked cookies for all sites.
  • Terminal: fixed a bug where the add new tab button on the terminal app’s header bar would not show up in tablet mode.
  • Upgrader: brought back the cancel button so you can stop Chrome OS from upgrading the container.
  • Linux (Beta) apps: fixed penguin fallback icons not being loaded with Linux apps that have no icons
OOBE (first-boot setup)
  • Update screen: if your Chromebook finds a Chrome OS update during setup but has less than 50% battery left, there will be a new battery warning on the update screen.
  • Enterprise: added an enterprise enrollment button on the OOBE Shelf, which should be visible when the user creates their account.
  • Family Link: added a Family Link notice screen after the parent selects sign in for a child and the child is older than 13 years old.
  • EULA: set the background of the EULA Terms of Service to transparent.
  • EULA: fixed a small bug where the “Close” button isn’t focused by default, preventing users from quickly hitting the “Enter” key to dismiss the EULA overlay.

The nitty-gritty stuff

The following bullet points below is an advanced section of changes that impacts web developers and enterprise users.

Chrome
  • Downloads: made it clear that download.filename is ignored if OnDeterminedFilename listener is registered
  • Network: fixed inconsistent behavior of Network.GetCookies across different URLs.
  • PDF: Fixed CSP frame-ancestors not overriding X-Frame-Options
  • Dev Tools: fixed handling of pointer events in Inspector overlay
Blink
  • Web Serial API: Chrome will now order the serial ports by file paths so that the user can quickly jump to the desired serial port when the serial port chooser pops up. This is incredibly useful when the system has plenty of TTY ports.

Source: chromium bug tracker

  • SVG: fixed a bug where SVG files would not display when disabling cache from DevTools. This was a serious bug that impacted a lot of web developers!
  • Internals: moved zoom level handling from RenderWidget into Blink. This part of a broader scope to move Legacy IPC messages to mojo, which allows developers to remove a number of interfaces from the public Blink API.
  • IME: fixed IME events not being dispatched properly to Pepper, which caused the input field to display the alphabet instead of foreign languages.
  • Flexbox: fixed a bug where the column flex-item grid would rapidly grow when using the DevTools to inspect it.
  • Flexbox: fixed a bug where document.elementsFromPoint on a flex hierarchy freezes the page.
  • [Not new] CSS: implemented ::marker pseudo-element, which represents the automatically generated marker box of a list item. Before this implementation, developers could user ::before and ::after. ::marker is similar to those two in a sense that it’s a tree-abiding pseudo-element, so it always fits within the box tree. The main difference is that ::marker only accepts a small subset of safe properties because the marker box layout is typically undefined. Note: not new to this build of Chrome, I missed it a few M86 builds before this one.
  • [Not new] DOM: implemented ParentNode.prototype.replaceChildren. This replaces all children of the ParentNode with passed-in nodes. The replaceChildren API enables web developers to easily replace node’s children without spending cycles on which way is best. Note: not new to this build of Chrome, I missed it a few M86 builds before this one.

Platform changes

This part of the list covers the most significant platform changes I found in this build, from platform version 13371.0.0 to 13380.0.0. This includes low level changes, including kernel and driver updates and bug fixes. Note: there are probably a lot more things I missed!

Libapps
  • Hterm: Fixed moving window between displays of different DPIs resulting in incorrect scaling
  • Hterm: fixed a bug where the text that scrolls off the top of the screen disappears.
  • Hterm: updated the terminal find bar behavior. Users can select and scroll to the next instance using the Down arrow button on find bar, Ctrl + G, or Enter key. Users can select and scroll to the previous instance using the Up arrow button on the find bar. Ctrl + Shift + G, or Shift + Enter. Note: to launch the find bar, press Ctrl + Shift + F.
  • Hterm: updated the find bar’s font to Noto Sans.
Platform2
  • Login: ADB sideloading will be enabled outside of developer mode on managed devices/users if the policies are set to allow it.

Things to watch out for

The following is a list of issues I personally ran into in this build of Chrome OS. These issues may vary depending on your Chromebook and user profile. This list will not cover issues flipped on by chrome flags.

  • SafetyNet CTS profile fails. This means apps like Netflix will not be available on your Chromebook
  • The tablet mode gesture bar is illegible due to a color change that made it black.
  • I've experienced some random Chrome OS crashes when deleting characters off the app drawer search bar.
  • The Linux (Beta) terminal may sometimes fail to start. If this happens to you, try relaunching the terminal again.
  • One of my testers are experiencing random crashes on their Pixelbook. YMMV!
